Frequently Asked Questions:
How much power do I need?  How big of a generator? How much power does it take to run my house? (or camper, or food truck, etc.)
A:  How many watts is always the big question.  And like most big questions, there's a whole of "well it depends."  We'll give you some good rules of thumb here to help you decide.
For RVs / travel trailer / campers:
  • If you have a 13,500 btu air conditioner you'll usually want a minimum of 3000 watts.  Our customer will generally go with a Honda EU3000is if they need the electric start feature, or they'll run two of the Honda EU2000i's in parallel if they'd prefer less weight and that extra power.
  • If your camper has a 15,000 btu air conditioner, you'll usually need a minimum of 3500 watts.  Our customers will generally go with two Honda EU2000i's running in parallel or for big time needs where the weight isn't a major issue, they'll go with the Honda EU7000is.

For Home or Office Use:

  • Decide if you'll need to power 220V / 240V items (clothes dryer, well pump, etc.) or just normal household 110V / 120V items (items that run on a normal household plug.)  If you need 220V power, go with the Honda EU7000is (or something even bigger if required) for smaller 110V only needs, the EU3000is or EU2000i may suffice.
  • If you want to be able to connect your generator to one plug-in to power your home instead of running any extension cords, a 220V capable generator like the Honda EU7000is is best.  Your electrician can install a "transfer switch" to prevent power back-feeding through your utility line.  Small 120V transfer switches are available but not very common.
  • Determine your basic needs with help from the Honda reference chart below.

Q:  What's the quietest generator?  How do I compare noise levels?
A:  Noise levels are measured by decibels dB(A).  Honda measures their noise levels at the distance of 9 feet.  We consider 60 dB(A) to be normal conversation / normal speech level.  If your generator is at or below the 60 dB mark, we consider that as super quiet and suitable for campsites.  As you go much higher than that 60 dB level, the generator noise gets annoying as you have to raise your voice.  Many brand X cheapie generators run around the 80 dB range.  Other standard open frame generators are often in the 70-78 dB range, 70 dB is the noise of a typical vacuum cleaner, not something you want running at your campsite.
Another important factor to keep in mind is that the EU series Honda inverter generators run exactly as fast as needed for the load at any given time.  The Eco-Throttle provides that feature allowing your engine speed (RPMs) to vary to meet the load requirements which keeps the noise level as low as possible plus offers better fuel efficiency.

Here's a handy noise level comparison chart from Honda which lists the generator noise levels by model on the left and reference points on the right.
